A custom sample is not priced like one deck taken from a bulk run. File checking, sample setup, material preparation, cutting and manual assembly may be required for only a few sets. Max Deck Print confirms the sample method, fee and delivery charges after reviewing the project. Bulk production starts from 1,000 sets; stock samples and custom proofs are handled separately.

Why is sample cost separate from bulk unit cost?
A bulk quotation spreads setup across many complete sets. A custom sample can require the same file review and preparation for a small output, with extra hand work for trimming, sorting and box assembly. Special stock, foil tooling, edge treatment or an unusual package can also change the proof route.
Ask for the sample price as its own line. Keep courier cost, tooling and additional revision rounds visible. This makes it possible to compare sampling options without mistaking a development cost for the final deck unit price.
What should a sample quotation specify?
- The exact stock, finished dimensions, card count and number of sample sets.
- Whether the sample uses all artwork or representative cards only.
- The printing and finishing method, including any difference from bulk production.
- Whether the box, booklet, inserts and assembly are included.
- Which characteristics the sample is intended to approve.
- The sample fee, delivery charges, expected schedule and arrangements for revisions.
For a game deck, include repeated cards and back groups. For tarot, include the guidebook and any gilded edge. For learning cards, include the question-and-answer pairing. One generic sample cannot validate every one of these requirements.
How should you inspect and approve the sample?
- Compare the sample with the current specification and artwork version, not a previous email attachment.
- Count cards and verify repeats, orientation, back pairing and printed instructions.
- Review text, borders, rounded corners and the placement of any effect under consistent lighting.
- Compare handling and opacity with the agreed material reference.
- Assemble the complete contents and check box fit, opening and closing.
- Send one consolidated approval or correction list with card IDs, photographs and revision details.
Separate an artwork correction from a manufacturing observation. For example, a spelling change requires a revised file; an incorrect back pairing requires a corrected card map. Ask whether a revised physical proof is needed before authorizing bulk production.
When is a physical proof most useful?
Consider a physical proof when using unfamiliar stock, critical brand colors, PVC, foil or spot effects, edge treatments or a new box structure. A repeat order still needs confirmation of the current files and specification. A past sample does not automatically approve a changed stock, finish or card count.

How much does a custom playing card sample cost?
The sample fee is quoted after the material, artwork, finish, packaging, sample quantity and proof method are defined. Existing stock references and custom printed proofs are different services. Courier charges and any special tooling are confirmed separately before proceeding.
Is the sample fee credited against a bulk order?
Do not assume a credit or refund. Ask the team to state any agreed sample credit explicitly in the quotation and final PI.
Does a sample always use the bulk production process?
No. A short-run proof can use a different printing or finishing route. Confirm which features represent the bulk order and which are for layout or structure review only.
Can a PDF proof replace a physical sample?
A PDF can confirm artwork, text and card order. It cannot validate stock feel, opacity, surface reflection or box fit. Choose the proof method around the risks of the specific project.
